"Was ich esse" - A Comprehensive Food and Nutrition Tracker
"Was ich esse" is an Android app developed by Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung that allows users to keep track of their daily food and drink intake. With a product catalog of over 700 food items and dishes, complete with pictures, users can easily log their meals. In case a food item is missing, users can simply photograph it, name it, and add it to the catalog, which will only be visible on their personal smartphone.
The app automatically sorts the checked-in food items into the BZfE food pyramid and transfers them to a weekly protocol. The app gives users the freedom to choose whether to follow the scientific recommendations of the food pyramid or set their own priorities. Users can also set reminders for foods they tend to forget to eat.
The app additionally provides a comprehensive explanation of the BZfE food pyramid and its three colored levels, which indicate whether a food should be eaten in large, moderate, or small quantities. The app works with a portion model based on the size of the user's hand, eliminating the need for calorie counting and measurement scales.
